Discovering Padis

The Apuseni Natural Park is situated in Romania, in the administrative territory of counties Alba, Bihor and Cluj.

In the middle of it, it is situated Padiş, at an altitude of 1225 m, a real carst plateau, almost plain, crossed by numerous hills, a lot of lakes, some of them unique in Europe, wonderful pine trees and fir trees forests, through which rainfall water comes to the daylight in the Ponor Meadow, Ponor Izbuc or Boga Valley.

It is delimited in the north by Măgura Vânătă Mountain, in the west by the Mountain of Boga, in the east by the mountainous peak Moţului Church and in the south by a series of low summits (Tomasca, Rotunda, Rachita).

The western part of the plateau represents a plain full of small troughs, some of them with water, due to the very acid soil. Here, under the Mountain of Boga, you can find the Forestry Chalet Padiş. Near it, there is a spring, the only source of potable water in the region.

In the northern extremity of the plateau, in the limit which separates it from the Vărăşoaia Meadow, there is the Padiş Cave, with an aspect of descendent gallery which enters under the Mountain of Boga. In the eastern part, the plateau is crossed by the Tranghieşti and Gârjoaba Valleys, between these two, the old Padiş Chalet can be found, the first chalet in the region. This central part of the plateau is dominated by the mountainous peak Moţului Church (1.458 m), a wonderful and unique point from where you can get wide perspectives of the whole plateau, a breathtaking landscape. It is like a lighthouse for Padiş. From there you can admire Călineasa Peak, Scărişoara Plateau, The Lost World Plateau and Biharia Mountain, known as Cucurbăta Mare Peak, 1848 m.

From an administrative point of view, the Padiş region is part of the Pietroasa commune.

To Padiş, you can get on a very good road, depending from where you come. There is only one forest road Rachitele-Ic Ponor-Padis, from Cluj, over the mountains.

The following areas are part of the Padiş touristic region:

  • Padiş – Ponor Fortress Basin
  • Someşul Cald Gorges – Vărăşoaia Meadow
  • Cucilata Meadow
  • Galbena Gorges – The Flowers Meadow
